Contaminated land case study - Pye Green, Cannock Chase

Following a year of uncertainty and five months of testing, 55 properties in Pye Green, Cannock Chase have been classified as free from contamination.

The houses were built on a former landfill site which operated until 1971, when the land was then filled in with unknown waste materials, which posed a potential risk to human health and water supply pipes.

The properties were identified as being at risk from contamination in January 2010 by Cannock Chase District Council environmental team. Work began extracting and testing soil samples in September 2010 and the area was eventually given the all-clear in February 2011.

Tony Williams, the Council’s environmental leader said, "I’m delighted that no contamination has been discovered, and we’ve written to all householders to pass on the good news."
