Contaminated land case study - Invergordon, Ross-shire
Two blocks of flats built on the site of a former gasworks in Joss Street, Invergordon, have finally been demolished, two years after tests revealed high levels of the chemicals benzene, benzo(a)pyrene and other contaminants in the gardens of 24 Ross-shire properties.
While residents were fortunate not to have to fund the remediation, they were forced to leave their homes in February 2007 and were re-housed, after Highland Council decided to demolish the flats and allow the contamination in and around the buildings to be removed. The remediation work commenced in September 2007, and it is hoped that once completed the site will be redeveloped for residential housing.
