Contaminated land case study - Leftwich
Residents on Muir Housing Association's estate in Leftwich have learned there are no significant health risks to people living on the site, either now or in the future, from low levels of substances found in the ground beneath their homes.
Vale Royal Borough Council originally discovered pockets of methane gas on the Muirfield Close housing estate, believed to have been generated by waste and decomposing vegetation buried beneath the site.
Investigations revealed Muir Group Housing Association had not correctly installed gas membranes at some of the properties during construction. As a result they agreed to not only replace the membranes, but also increase ventilation. A detailed investigation of the site concluded the remedial action carried out would significantly reduce the levels of contaminants the residents are exposed to in the future.
