Contaminated land case study - Millom

Residents on a housing estate in Millom, Cumbria have greeted news that they are not living on contaminated land with relief.

A survey undertaken in January 2007 on land adjacent to the houses, revealed that they had been constructed on the site of former railway sidings, and that 'concerning' levels of arsenic, methane and carbon dioxide had been found. Following almost 12 months of worry for residents, a report has concluded that although arsenic levels were found to be above Soil Guideline Values, a "detailed site specific risk assessment found that it does not pose a risk to current or future residents."

Homeowners are once again free to buy and sell properties in the area, without the issue of contaminated land hanging over them and delaying any potential transaction.
