Contaminated land case study - Aberdeen
Remediation work on a Scottish housing estate, built on the site of a former gas works in Huntly, is underway, almost two years after the original contamination was discovered.
Initial investigations in February 2006 revealed the possibility of significant harm to residents through the inhalation of benzene vapour, and the pollution of groundwater from naphthalene, petroleum hydrocarbons and cyanide.
A total of 32 flats belonging to Grampian Housing Association were found to be affected and Aberdeenshire Council has successfully secured £190,000 from the Scottish Executive to remediate the land.
