Contaminated land case study - Wolverhampton
Following on from a detailed contaminated land study which has taken place on the site of the former Courtaulds Dunstall Hall Works, Wolverhampton City Council is to conduct an investigation into possible asbestos contamination in the gardens of over a quarter of the homes on the estate.
The presence of asbestos first came to light way back in 2005, when gardens on the Farndale Estate were tested for carbon disulphide, a chemical which was used in the manufacture of rayon at Courtaulds. Since then, more samples have been taken from gardens across the estate and nine properties have already been declared contaminated by the Council.
Speaking on behalf of the Council, Chief Regulatory Services Officer Nick Edwards said: ‘The work marks what is hopefully the final stages in the Council’s programme to rid Farndale of contaminants’.
